Your God
is too Small!
|
This is the title of a book that I read many years ago. The author provided a lengthy list of life issues that we, yes even Christians, worry, fret and even become paranoid about. If he was writing this book today, there would be some items on his list that are probably still on many lists today. There would also be entirely new items. What has not changed is that Christians still worry, fret and even are paranoid. Satan delights in tempting us to worry rather than putting our faith and trust in our heavenly Father.
|
We confess in the first article of the Apostles’ Creed, “I believe in God the Father almighty!” In Martin Luther’s explanation of this article, he explains why you and I do not need to worry, fret or be paranoid. He explains that our Heavenly Father “provides all that I (we) need to support this body and life…”
My encouragement to you is found in the promise of Jesus Christ, “Lo, I am with you always!” I point you to His invitation, “Come unto me all you who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.” On another occasion Jesus urges us to, “Cast all of our anxieties (worries) upon Him!” Then He promises, “and I will take care of you!”
As I receive reports and engage in conversations with pastors and lay leaders, I hear a lot of “worry” talk. At the top of the congregational worry list is finances. (Is this also at the top of your personal, home/family worry list?) Dear people of God, our Heavenly Father is still and will ever be Almighty. He has promised and will keep His promise to “provide all that we need to support our body and life.”
Certainly some, perhaps some of you, are unemployed or under-employed. If so, I pray that God will watch over you and guide you to what He knows to be the right employment situation for you.
The United States of America is still the most blessed nation on earth. The cost for basic life necessities is increasing. Many Missouri District congregations and many of you are struggling at this moment with financial issues. Nevertheless, God has not failed to provide us with enough. Rather, in many cases, we struggle because of the choices we make regarding how we use the money He provides.
|
Some examples:
Do we really need the 52-inch TV with surround sound? Would a 25- or 32-inch TV that costs much less suffice?
Your closets are already full of clothes, shoes, etc. Do you really need new clothes, shoes and accessories?
Could you rent a boat to go fishing rather than purchase one?
|
The Holy Scriptures remind us “that where our treasure is, there our heart will be also.”
We still have the freedom to worship. You and I have the opportunity to be in God’s house every week to receive the Gospel, the Lord’s Supper and to study God’s Word together in Bible class. The Holy Spirit powerfully works through these gracious gifts from our Heavenly Father to strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ.
Through Jesus, you, at any time, can approach your Heavenly Father with any concern, worry, doubt, fear or need. So, when you start to worry, I encourage you to look to the empty cross of Good Friday, Christ’s empty Easter tomb and your ascended Lord for the forgiveness of your sins, comfort in the hope of eternal life that He has won for you and the assurance that the Almighty God will “provide all that you need to support your body and life.”
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea …The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress … Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth…” (Psalm 46, selected verses). “A Mighty Fortress is our God!”
